Internet Addiction

Duong, XL,  et al in their 2020 Int J Prev Med study "How has internet addiction been tracked over the last decade?  A literature review a 3C paradigm for future research" provides the following information gathered from 826 research articles:

*Internet addiction: an impulse-control disorder of internet use having detrimental impact on daily life functions, family relationships, and emotional stability.  Examples: addictive usage of social networking sites (SNS) e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat; online shopping addiction; internet pornography addiction; gambling disorders

*Global pooled prevalence in the general population- 6%

*Psychiatric Comorbidities include psychiatric symptoms such as:

personality disorders, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), hostility, anxiety, loneliness, low self esteem, poor self-control, impulsivity, depression, alexithymia (inability to identify and describe personally experienced emotions) and sensation-seeking and

High comorbidity with psychiatric disorders such as: anxiety disorder, problem gambling, suicidal ideation, self-injurious and risk-taking behaviors, eating disorders and obesity-related problems
